Color of the Month: Decorating with Periwinkle

Looking for a soft, serene shade that will inject your home with color without overpowering it? Standard “colors of the rainbow” just not doing it for you? Neutrals too bland? Give this peaceful “in-between” shade a try: periwinkle.

It’s not blue, but not quite purple; less saturated than lavender but more unique than robin’s-egg. Periwinkle is a lovely calming shade of blue-violet, a soft indigo. Because it’s a tertiary color, periwinkle can be more blue or more purple depending on your taste, but the simplicity of its base colors make it versatile. In different degrees of saturation, from barely-there to in-your-face, it’s always a beautiful hue. It complements neutrals, metallics, and other shades of blue and purple, but can be used unexpectedly in combinations where purple would normally clash (like orange or green) thanks to the blue undertones.

The color is subtle enough to use in large quantities yet bold enough to stand out against a contrasting or neutral backdrop. It’s pretty much the perfect color for any color scheme, style, and room! That just-right tranquil effect makes periwinkle an excellent choice for bedrooms and living areas, but it looks great virtually anywhere in the home.
