High Style: The Wingback Chair

Formal, stylish, classic, and striking, yet supremely comfortable and practical. Sounds impossible? It’s not. Case in point: the wingback chair.

Also known as a wing chair, this seat has been fashionable for centuries. Its high, winged sides were originally designed to provide protection from drafts while trapping the heat from the nearby fireplace (hence the traditional¬†positioning near the fireplace). The typical wingback features “wings” on either side of the tall back, usually continuing through the armrests, for a cozy but elegant seat; wingback chairs are available in a huge variety of shapes, styles, and upholstery options.
