Color of the Month: Decorating with Purple

Pantone is ringing in 2014 in a splash of lovely, soft purple. The 2014 Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid, described as a “captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones” that “emanates great joy, love and health.”

As a kid, I considered purple my favorite color. At some point I grew out of it for what I thought was a more sophisticated blue, which was replaced by cheery orange, which still remains my favorite. But now purple may be back in the running!

Radiant Orchid is a gorgeous shade that is so usable. It’s not just a girly color for decorating little girls’ rooms and play spaces; its a grown-up, eye-catching warm tone is perfect for brightening neutral rooms but can also be used with deep greens, bright turquoise and teal, and light yellows according to Pantone’s press release.

I’ve found that too much purple is overwhelming, but I love it as an accent. Check out these tastefully done rooms featuring Radiant Orchid in small pops of color as well as larger doses.

I love it on accent walls to liven up otherwise stark rooms:

And of course, you can always go all-out girly – but sophisticated – with it:

What a vibrant and beautiful color! I love how it works in every room. Pantone definitely got the color of the year right!

What’s your favorite color? Do you have purple in your home?
