Color of the Month: Decorating with Teal

Now that we’re really in the thick of summer (and thick is indeed how the air feels today), it’s time to go all-out with summer colors. Our pick for the month of July is a vibrant yet versatile shade of blue-green that’s rich and bold but simultaneously classic and timeless: teal.

Teal is not to be confused with turquoise or aquamarine, though the shades are similar enough to have sparked numerous online debates over which hue is which:

At its deepest it can look almost navy, and at its brightest it’s easily confused with turquoise.

It evokes visions of long days spent lazing in tropical locales, gazing at a sea in shades never seen before on water. It’s a color that’s bright and cheerful enough to perk you up but calming at the same time, a color found in decor styles ranging from beachy to elegant and midcentury to Mediterranean to modern.

Teal pairs perfectly with white and other neutrals and complements coral (its opposite on the color wheel), another trendy shade. It works well with other warm red, orange and yellow shades and sets off metallics – gold and silver tones alike – beautifully.

These homes will show you how it’s done when it comes to teal…
