The kids are in school, bathing suits exchanged for backpacks; the long summer days are slowly but surely getting shorter; and we’ve just gotten through what I hope is the last heat wave of the summer. It’s beginning to look a lot like fall!
While summer’s my favorite, autumn has its own special feel. I’m looking forward to the explosion of color on the trees, the crunchy leaves underfoot, the crisp, fresh evenings. Being a Southern Californian, I am still enthralled by the marked change in seasons – for me, fall just meant back-to-school and shopping for new “winter” clothes (no coats, mind you). Now that I’m living on the East Coast, fall has become synonymous with cozy sweaters and beautiful colors, and I like to change around my home decor to reflect that.
It’s not hard, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune! Traditional decorators say to add bowls of acorns, painted pumpkins, spice-scented candles, and other “fall-y” accessories, but that’s not my thing – a little too outdoorsy for me. I like more subtly nature-inspired pieces and fabrics. Lighting, especially floor and table lamps, is an easy place to make small, inexpensive changes that affect the whole atmosphere of your home:
You can also put in an entirely new end or coffee table.
If your home has a fall-like scheme, consider making a more permanent change, like a bamboo sink:
Or smaller changes, like cabinet hardware.
Area rugs, pillows, and throws are a great and inexpensive way to update as the seasons change, especially in the fall – more fabric = more warmth!
in the kitchen:
on the wall:
in the kids’ room, office, or study area:
even in the bathroom!
I’m feeling warmer already! (Or is that heat wave NOT really over yet?)
Happy decorating, and enjoy your autumn!
