Make Your Stair Landing Work for You

Add it to the list of awkward spaces in the home. The stair landing is largely useless in many homes, a transitional space that tends to collect the detritus of people who are too lazy to go up or down the stairs. But, like other awkward spaces, the landing has loads of untapped potential.

A larger landing can be outfitted with seating, shelving (recessed for tight spaces), cabinetry, or other useful additions for the sake of convenience. Turn it into a reading nook, a paperwork station, a grab-and-go mini mudroom, or a storage space. Depending on the size of your landing, you may be able to turn it into that room you’ve always wanted: a library, an office, a sitting room… Get creative!

Smaller landings may not be as useful as their larger counterparts, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring! Brighten the space with art, potted plants, mirrors, a photo gallery, or bold wall treatments.
